WHO IS THE PORTMASTER?

James Sayers, a mysterious Englishman of means from Norfolk England, was invited to Tasmania, sailing on the Whirlwind by the well to do Business Folk of Van Dieman’s Land. He settled on the magnificent Mersey River in 1855 with his 10 Children, losing his wife and 11th child on the journey over.

James Sayers self- proclaimed Master of the Port ran Freight punts, Ships and was the first to bring steamers to the Mersey. A very successful pioneer of the area until to quote his youngest daughter “Father went away 1896” which still can be seen engraved into the kitchen wall. Thus began the legend of James Sayers Port Master of the Mersey River.

He purchased the House and Land in 1867 from Roger Windspear Local butcher, baker and dentist if you have a wailing tooth ache and James extended it into what you see today.
